Biodiesel Cars Are Better For the Environment

One of the ways by which we can help with the environment is by owning and using one of those biodiesel cars. In fact, you do not even have to buy a new car to own one; you can have your car converted from a regular car fuel to a biodiesel one. There are even some cars that do not do not even need any engine modification to be able to use biodiesel fuel. So as not to surprise the engine, mix regular diesel with 20% diesel. This will not create any problems for your engine. Although, if you are interested to buy one, you can check out the World Wide Web and you will find several sites that are selling these environmentally friendly cars.

Bees And The Environment

New studies are slowly shedding light on the important role that genes and environment play in bee behaviour. It has long been known that the queen has two X chromosomes and retains the male sperm after mating. She fertilises eggs only when the need arises to produce new nymph queens. This leads to swarming, with queen and bees leaving the hive to establish a colony elsewhere. The males are not the result of sexual mating and they contain only half a set of chromosomes. Workers are sterile females arising from an asexual process.

Walking and the Environment

“Today I have grown taller walking with the trees.” Karle Wilson Baker

We all know that exercise is good for you. And walking is probably the easiest form to get into. But did you know that walking plays a part in helping improve your environment?

Walking improves our quality of life because it helps to protect the living environment and natural resources. It can also be built into transportation systems.

Added health and environmental benefits come from the fact that walking is a pollution free activity. It’s also a quiet pastime. So we benefit from cleaner air and there’s a reduction in traffic noise too.

Wedding Flowers

The selection process of your wedding flowers will usually begin with a discussion of the Bride’s bouquet. You will have a choice of several basic styles. These are cascade, crescent, contemporary, nosegay, hand tied bouquet and arm or presentation style. You can better prepare for your first meeting with your florist if you bring the following;

o A list of those in your wedding party that will need flowers.

o A list of what flowers you will want at the ceremony.

o A list of what flowers will be needed at the reception, including table count, size and shape.

o Color/fabric swatches and pictures of your dress and bridesmaids dresses, if you have them.

o Feel free to also bring pictures of flowers that you like.

Your florist will also have pictures of flowers, bouquets and arrangements to help determine exactly what will create the wedding of your dreams. If your wedding has a “theme”, let your florist know before the consultation, as they can prepare suggestions to fit the style of your wedding. After style, the next thing to consider is if there are any specific flowers you want.

Keep in mind that some flowers are not in season year round. The flowers that will give the best presentation are those in their season prime. Make sure you let your florist know if your ceremony and/or reception will be held outdoors. Certain flowers do not hold up in hot/humid conditions. Consider color, shape, and fragrance when selecting your bouquet flowers. A note of advice on color choice, avoid all white flowers, they do not photograph well.

It is important that you are upfront with your florist about your budget. Not just for your bouquet but for all of your flowers. Be realistic. You may want a $200 bridal bouquet, but if you only have $400 for a flower budget, you will not have enough left for 3 bridesmaids bouquets, 2 corsages, 3 boutonnieres and 15 centerpieces for your reception. Choose similar flowers to be used throughout your wedding. Using 20 different kinds of flowers will quickly increase the cost. Your florist can balance your needs with your budget. They can offer alternatives. Exotic flowers such as Orchids are very pretty, but they are more expensive. Consider more affordable flowers if you are on a budget. Don’t plan your wedding near big flower holidays, such as Valentine’s Day, Easter and Mother’s Day. If you do, expect to pay more for your flowers. Not because the florist’s want to charge you more, but due to the fact that the wholesalers charge more during these busy holidays based on growing and demand.

Once you have chosen your Bouquet you have selected the “center” of your wedding flowers. The other pieces can be used to incorporate your bouquet flowers throughout your entire wedding. The following is an example list of the flowers you may need for your “Special Day”…

o Bride’s Bouquet

o Toss Bouquet for Bride to Throw

o Maid of Honor Bouquet

o Bridesmaids Bouquets

o Grooms Boutonniere

o Boutonnieres for Best Man and other male attendants in the wedding

o Boutonnieres for Father of Bride and Groom

o Corsages for Mothers/Grandmothers and/or Guests of Honor

o Boutonniere for Ring Bearer

o Flower Basket (with petals?) or small bouquet for flower girl*

o Ceremony Arrangements (can serve double duty at your reception perhaps at your buffet)

o Vase at Guest Book Table

o Centerpieces for Reception Tables (make sure you get an accurate count)

o Centerpiece for Head Table (usually larger than other centerpieces)

o Flowers or Petals for Cake Table (Flowers for Cake if necessary)

*If you are considering petals for the aisle at your ceremony, make sure your accomodations allow them. Also remember that roses with color petals will stain the carpet if stepped on. White petals are recommended for carpeted areas.

A very important detail is to make sure your florist knows exactly when and where your flowers will need to be delivered. They will also need to know ahead of time if you will need them to set up the flowers. If you have someone else handling set up, make sure your florist knows who they are and how to reach them. You will probably want your flowers to arrive at least an hour before you need them. Make sure you have somewhere safe and cool to keep them until you use them. Always leave your florist a phone number of someone you trust (preferrably with a cel phone) that can handle any last minute decisions regarding your flowers.

Finally, when it comes to your wedding flowers, don’t skimp! I have heard many sad stories about bride’s trying “do-it-yourself” flowers or having a friend design them, only to end up with bouquets falling apart minutes before the wedding! Don’t risk it! Experienced florists process and design your wedding flowers for optimum presentation and performance. Your flowers are one of the most important elements of your wedding! You want them to be beautiful. They compliment you, your wedding party, your wedding photos and provide an elegant atmosphere for you and your guests on your special day!

Congratulations!

Flowers and Allergies

Flowers are beautiful. They brighten up a room and make everything in it seem more beautiful, more cheerful. For most people a vase of flowers on the table signifies that that room is a happy one, a comfortable place to be. For allergy sufferers, however, a vase of flowers is far from inviting- it’s treacherous. If you’re one of those unlucky people who enjoys fresh flowers but has to consider the effect they’ll have on your allergies, plastic flowers are not your only option. You just have to know which types of flowers are dangerous. Of the huge variety of flowers that you can plant or buy, many types of flowers will affect your allergies very little- or even not at all.

Dangerous Flowers for Allergy Sufferers

Truth is, if your allergies are particularly severe, most flowers are going to affect you negatively. In general, the more dangerous flowers are the ones with more pollen. So a good guideline when decorating with flowers to avoid those ones that have visible pollen.

One type of flower that is particularly bad for allergy sufferers is tree flowers. If creating a flower arrangement, be careful not to include almond, cherry, orange, or any other kind of tree blossom. Though they are beautiful flowers, they’re some of the most powerfully allergy-causing.

Lilies are some of the more dangerous flowers for allergy sufferers, as parts of them are covered in powdery orange pollen. Strangely enough, however, they can be a good choice for allergy sufferers, as it’s easy to simply remove the stems of pollen from each flower. Just have a non-allergic friend or family member do this particular job, as it will probably have you sneezing in two seconds flat.

Good Flowers for Allergy Sufferers

There are several types of flowers that will affect allergy suffers less. One of these is possibly mums and daisies. While regular mums and daisies do have lots of pollen, an new hybrid type of daisy, called formal doubles, that do not have any pollen at all, and therefore won’t aggravate allergies. Forma double flowers were bred so that the parts of the flower that used to produce pollen now produce petals. Watch out for regular mums and daisies, however, as they can be highly allergic. If in doubt, ask your florist.

Another great choice for the allergy sufferer is roses. Roses are some of the most beautiful and elegant flower you can find, and fortunately for allergy sufferers, they don’t have much effect on allergies. The reason for this is that their pollen is too large in size to be able to become airborne and truly infiltrate the respiratory system. If in doubt, choose roses with little or no smell- the less smell, the less pollen.

Last but not least, one of the best kinds of flowers for allergy sufferers are orchids. Orchids are gorgeous and exotic flowers that come in an amazing variety of shapes and colors. Very few types of orchids cause any pollen-related allergies, and so are quite safe for those allergic to most flowers. It is important to note, though, that some orchids may cause a slight skin rash on sensitive individuals.

Flower Care – Arranging and Choosing Flowers

Flowers

Nothing expresses feelings or emotions quite like flowers. Whether you choose roses, stargazer lilies, orchids, dahlias, snapdragons, or long lasting carnations or daisies, their beauty and their fragrance leave a memory for weeks to come.

Flowers can be exotic and wild, delicate and soothing, vibrant and shocking, woodsy and natural, or earthy and wildflower looking, and can reflect a myriad of colors and fragrances to brighten someone’s day.

Although most flowers have meanings, most recipients would never be aware of what those meanings are. For all practical purposes, flowers mean, “I Am Thinking of You” or “I Love You!”

Arranging

If your flowers are pre-arranged, you will only need to check the water level daily. If you purchased loosely wrapped flowers, you can arrange them in a vase, or a basket or a ceramic container of your choice and enjoy arranging the flowers any way you like. Flowers can be arranged all around, as seen in a table centerpiece so it can be viewed on all sides, or they can be arranged one-sided for a desk or end table or hospital room if the back is not going to be on view.

How to Choose Flowers

Seasonal flowers are usually more affordable and often live longer than flowers bought out of season. They will most likely last longer and look prettier as well. But, it is always nice to mix flowers together. Different textures, different colors and different shapes is what makes an arrangement have visual appeal. Even if you do not grow your own flowers, learning a bit about flower arranging will help you make smart choices and create beautiful flower arrangements. Some flowers are long lasting and some are short lived and delicate. It is a good idea to mix both for a longer lasting arrangement.

Flower Care

Pre-Arranged Flowers

If the flowers are already arranged, it is important to check the water level immediately upon arrival. You must add room temperature water if needed and keep the vase full. The use of floral preservative in the water can help the flowers live longer.

Display the arrangement in a cool location and out of direct sunlight. Try to avoid excessively hot or cold areas, such as near electrical appliances, refrigerators, television sets or computers or by moving air, such as an air conditioning vent or a fan.

Fresh Cut Flowers

Immediately upon arrival, remove all foliage which would be below water level in your arrangement. Take care not to injure the stems. Re-cut the stems under water with a sharp knife and place the flowers in a deep container filled with room temperature or slightly warmer water and floral preservative.

Roses

Pre-Arranged Roses

Follow the same instructions as above for pre-arranged flowers. However, if a rose wilts, you can revive it by submerging the entire flower and stem in a tub or tray of warm water and straighten it out. Cut one inch from the end of the stem while it is still underwater with sharp scissors or a knife. Allow the rose to lie there for a few hours and it will eventually revive. Another choice would be to float the bloom in a fancy cocktail glass or desert glass on a pedestal. It will stay pretty for days to come.

Fresh Cut Roses

Rinse rose stems and greenery under running water to remove bacteria. Re-cut rose stem ends under water, using sharp scissors or knife. Use a clean container with room temperature water containing floral preservative. Rearrange in container, similar to the way they looked before.

Best Flowers to Show Sympathy

People use flowers for a number of reasons. They are sent to others when something great has happened in their life, as an expression of love, for encouragement, and also for sympathy. They are a way in which people let others know that they are thinking about them in both good times and in bad, but it is in the bad times when someone needs to know that they are supported, especially in a time of grief.

Flowers for sympathy

Flowers for sympathy are certainly not meant to take away the pain that comes during a grieving time. However, this gesture is a great way to let other family members and friends know that they are not alone in their grief; that they have always got someone by their side. It is an honorable gesture, a gesture of kindness, and one of respect. The act shows those grieving how the life of the deceased touched the life of the one sending the flowers.

The best sympathy flowers

The debate on what flowers are the best sympathy flowers has been ongoing for quite some time. Some may say lilies are the best while others say yellow roses are a great expression of sympathy. Many people have their preferences and their favorites. You’ve probably even sat in a funeral home, looking at all of the different flower arrangements and thought, “that is an interesting choice of flower.” It is not at all common to see flowers that do not look like the traditional funeral flower.

However, the flowers that seems to be favored and have proven to be an adequate choice for sympathy flowers is those flowers that are composed of many different colors. It is amazing how many buying flowers for sympathy do not think of the colors of the flowers. Then again, there are many who do. Even something as simple as picking out your favorite colors can be adequate.

What is ideal is buying flowers that were the favorite colors of the deceased, if that is known, and even finding out what their favorite flower was. If not known, pastels make a great choice and it is always safe to go with lilies and roses. A light pastel red makes a wonderful color of flower to show sympathy.

Real VS Artificial

The sender of the flowers usually makes the decision to use real or artificial flowers. Real flowers smell very sweet and give the grieving a comfortable feeling. However, the sender usually states that they want a particular arrangement to go to a specific person and may want the flowers to last them for a while once in their home. Many times these flowers may have a candle or another centerpiece included with them, which makes it ideal to choose artificial flowers.

If the sender knows if the person receiving the flowers likes real or artificial, that is a great way to solve that dilemma when buying sympathy flowers. The idea is to give the grieving individual something that can be enjoyed in their time of grief.

The perfect flowers

With this said, it is fair to say that the best sympathy flowers are going to be those that are colorful. The flowers should also be either a favorite flower of the deceased or the person receiving the arrangement. If not sure, then roses and lilies make a great choice. Whether or not to buy real flowers or artificial flowers depends on what you would like the recipient to use them for. If you want to provide an environment that is comfortable, then the sweet aroma of real flowers can be quite soothing.

Flowers in the Vegetable Garden

Flowers in the vegetable garden are becoming a common sight, especially marigolds. While marigolds are useful they aren’t edible, there are some edible flowers which also make good additions to the garden. I’m going to be talking about sunflowers, borage, and nasturtiums.

Flowers in the vegetable garden

1. Sunflowers. There’s a surprising amount of diversity among sunflowers. They have a range of colors beyond the most common yellow, a single flower on a plant with only one stalk or many flowers on different stalks and even the height has a huge range, from dwarfs of only a foot tall to giants over 15 feet tall.

Sunflowers are best known for their edible seeds, but they can also be used as a trap crop. Aphids and stinkbugs prefer sunflowers to most vegetables.

2. Borage. The flowers from borage can be used in salads or float on top of drinks. Also beneficial insects like to use borage flowers for nectar and pollen, helping to keep pest insect predators in your garden.

3. Nasturtiums. Nasturtium flowers have a slight peppery taste similar to watercress, they add some color and flavor to a salad of fresh greens.

Nasturtiums are also known for being a favorite of aphids, along with whiteflies and cabbage worms. Any pests that are on the nasturtiums aren’t on your more desirable vegetable plants.

As you can see, flowers in the vegetable garden do more than add a little color. They can repel insects, which is what marigolds do, they can also attract beneficial insects and draw pest insects away from the vegetables.
